Allergen Safety

4 min read

Nom404 helps you avoid foods that could trigger your allergies. Set up your allergen profile once, and the app will warn you every time you browse a menu. Here is how it all works.

Set up your allergen profile

You can set up your allergen profile in two places:

  1. During onboarding: When you first open the app, you will be asked about allergies and dietary preferences.
  2. In Settings: Go to Settings > Allergies & Diet to update your profile at any time.

You can select from the FDA Big 9 allergens (milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soy, sesame) plus additional tags like gluten, vegan, vegetarian, and halal.

How dietary tags work

When you browse a menu, you will see small colored tags on each item. These tell you at a glance what the item contains or is suitable for:

  • Green tags — Positive labels like “Vegetarian,” “Vegan,” or “Halal”
  • Amber/orange tags — Allergen warnings like “Contains Nuts,” “Contains Dairy,” or “Contains Gluten”

These tags are set by the business owner based on their recipes and ingredients.

Automatic warnings

If an item matches one of your allergies, Nom404 will show a clear warning before you add it to your cart. The warning tells you exactly which allergen was detected — for example, “This item contains dairy, which is in your allergen profile.”

You can still order the item if you choose to — the warning is there to make sure you are making an informed decision.

Removing or substituting ingredients

Many items allow you to remove or swap ingredients that trigger your allergies:

  • Remove: Tap the ingredient to remove it (e.g. remove cheese if you are avoiding dairy).
  • Substitute: If the business offers alternatives, you can swap the ingredient (e.g. oat milk instead of regular milk). Any price difference is shown upfront.

Not all items support removal or substitution — it depends on what the business has set up for each item.

What happens when a business cannot fulfill your request

Sometimes a business may not be able to accommodate a modification. If that happens:

  • The business will reject the specific modification with a reason (e.g. “We cannot remove sesame from this item as it is baked into the bread”).
  • You will receive a notification with their response.
  • You can choose to keep the item as-is, modify it differently, or remove it from your order.

Important disclaimer

While we encourage businesses to tag their items accurately, Nom404 cannot guarantee the completeness or accuracy of allergen data. If you have a serious or life-threatening allergy, always confirm directly with the business staff before ordering.
